Modern Mermaids

Real Mermaids Who Swim Among Us

Modern Mermaids parade down the street in Coney Island every June, are available for hire for your next swanky pool party, and still perform at Weeki Wachee Springs, on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

The Beautiful Mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs

Vintage Photo of Mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs

Billed as "The Only City of Live Mermaids," Weeki Wachee Springs has been in operation since the mid 1940s, and is still going strong.

The photograph at right, from the Florida State Archive, shows an early publicity shot. Weeki Wachee and the mermaids who perform there have kept up with the times, however: Check out the fabulously flamboyant hot pink mermaids on the cover of Weeki Wachee's official 2011 calendar, available for purchase from their online store.

And if you love to swim, look great in fins, and are interested in a career change, you may also want to check out Weeki Wachee's Sirens of the Deep Mermaid Camp.

The Annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, New York

Before you click on this link, be forewarned, some of these New York mermaids are fairly scantily clad. (No real nudity, just imaginative costumes and pasties in places which leave very little to the imagination.)

I lived in Manhattan for 16 years, and never once made it out for this fabulous event. One more thing to add to the bucket list, for sure!

Professional Mermaids

As it says on their site, Mermaids in Motion offers "a real, live mermaid for your private party, special event, print ad, television production, film and beyond." Wow! (If anyone reading this decides to give this kind of private party, please invite me.)

You may also want to visit Hannah Fraser's beautiful Web site, Hannah Mermaid. As it says on her bio page, "Hannah Fraser is a professional Mermaid, ocean environmentalist, performance artist and model." There are fascinating photos, video, and a very interesting story about how she found her "mermaid feet."
